Green Party Urges No U.S. Interference In Syria

From the Green Party of the United StatesGreen Party leaders today called on President Obama and Congress to cancel proposed military aid to Syrian rebels and press Israel to cease its attacks on Syria immediately, or risk an escalated conflict in the Middle East.

Greens urged the Obama Administration to pursue diplomacy and promote a political settlement instead of a deepening and bloody civil and proxy war.

On May 5, Leah Bolger, Secretary of Defense, and David Swanson, Secretary of Peace, of the Foreign Affairs Branch of the Green Shadow Cabinet published a statement opposing U.S. involvement in Syria and a condemnation of Israel's air strikes.

Greens noted that the claims about President Assad's government using sarin gas against Syrian rebels are still unverified and inconclusive; allegations have surfaced that some of the rebels may have used the banned chemical.

Michael Cornell Re-Elected to Columbia Council

Green Party member and former party chair Michael Cornell was elected to his fourth term as the River Hill representative to the Columbia Council. He had previously served as vice-chair and chair of the Council, which serves as the Board of Directors for the Columbia Association and acts as the city council.

"The council oversees the operations of $63 million annual budget, golf courses, lakes, and thousands of acres of open space," Cornell said. "Over the past few years we have been focused on watershed management and greening initiatives and have reorganized our budget into four major areas of sustainability".

Cornell is currently the sole Green Party member holding elected office in Maryland. Greens have previously served on city councils in College Park, Takoma Park, and Berwyn Heights. In his first contested race for Columbia Council, Michael was endorsed by the Baltimore Sun.

Jill Stein: Obama Budget Throws American People Under The Bus, Gives The Rich A Free Ride

From the Green Party of the United StatesJill Stein, the Green Party's 2012 presidential candidate today condemned the recently released Obama 2014 budget proposal, issuing the following statement:

"Despite his campaign promises to protect Social Security and make the economy fair, Obama's budget throws the American people under the bus. And it gives the economic elite a free ride on that same bus that's running us over.

Specifically, this budget swaps the painful $1.2 trillion in sequester cuts for a different, but equally painful, new package of cuts worth the same amount. As part of these new cuts, the President is leading the charge to roll back Medicare and Social Security - the 'Grand Bargain' - with ruthless corporate Republicans that Obama has promoted for years. There is nothing grand about dismantling the crown jewels of the New Deal and the Great Society."
